If you recently underwent a dental implant procedure and are recovering from surgery, you may wonder if your dental implant pain level is normal. Do dental implants hurt after surgery, and should you be concerned? In most cases, no, but our dental team wants to ensure you know what to expect when healing from dental implants.

Here is what you should know about dental implant pain and why dental implants hurt after placement.

Why Do Dental Implants Hurt After Surgery: You’ll Feel Pain for at Least a Week

The dental implant procedure is considered minimally invasive, but it is still major oral surgery. The dental implant procedure involves creating an opening in your gums and jaw so the implant can be placed.

Once the effects of anaesthesia wear off, some dental implant pain is normal. OTC pain relievers can alleviate your discomfort.

After about 24 hours, you may notice some post-surgery tenderness, swelling, and bruising around the implant site. A cold compress applied to your cheek intermittently can help to reduce your swelling and ease the dental implant pain.

You should eat a soft diet of protein-dense foods like scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, flakey fish, and yoghurt for the next few days to help the dental implant site heal. Avoid eating hot, spicy, or crunchy foods, so you don’t irritate the wound.

Your dentist will also provide you with a list of aftercare instructions to ensure your comfort and rapid recovery. These instructions may include resting with your head elevated on a pillow to facilitate drainage and reduce swelling, and rinsing with saline solution.

After about five days, dental implant pain symptoms subside, and your mouth will feel normal again.

Why Do Dental Implants Hurt After Surgery: Discomfort is Rare After Two Weeks

pain after tooth implants gosfordIf your dental implant pain has not improved after two weeks or seems to be getting worse, this may be cause for concern. Contact our practice for a follow-up appointment so we can identify the cause of your dental implant pain

The most common reason for prolonged discomfort after getting dental implants is usually an infection at the implant site. When the gum tissue around dental implants is inflamed, it causes pain and prevents the site from healing properly. Your dentist will clean and disinfect the implant and prescribe an antibiotic to treat the infection.

Digital Dental Implants Mean Less Discomfort

At DDII Dentist Gosford, we digitalise the dental implant procedure. We use 3D computer-guided techniques to create a template for your dentist to place your dental implants using flapless surgery. This means less time in surgery, little to no bleeding, no sutures, less dental implant pain, and a faster recovery.
